Tony Hong
Dr. Tony Hong is a lecturer in the School of English Studies at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), where he also serves as an advisor to the School’s Digital Writing Research & Service Centre. He earned his PhD in History and Politics from the School of International Studies at the University of Nottingham, which is recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a PhD in International Affairs. His current research examines China’s public and cultural diplomacy, with particular attention to how the country leverages traditional culture to win hearts and minds overseas and enhance its soft power. He is also interested in the promotion and development of China’s traditional intangible cultural heritage. In this area, he has co-authored the monograph China’s Non-State Soft Power Actors: Tai Chi, Traditional Culture, and the Practice of Public Diplomacy, published as part of Routledge’s China Policy Series, and has authored related scholarly research. In addition, his research interests include China’s intracultural relations, with a particular focus on Cantonese cultures—especially the lived experiences of Macao people living and/or studying in Chinese mainland—and related issues of cultural acculturation and adaptation, identity negotiation, and cross-regional perceptions.
